Dimitri E. Khoshtariya, D.Sci., Research Professor, was born in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1953. He obtained his Masters in Physics (specialty: Biophysics) from the Tbilisi State University in 1975 and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the A.N. Frumkin Institute of Electrochemistry in Moscow, Russia in 1980, under the direction of L.I. Krishtalik. After a number of postdoctoral and senior positions in Georgia and abroad, in 1996 he was appointed as a Head of Research Laboratory at the former Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics, Tbilisi, Georgia. D.E. Khoshtariya defended his D.Sci. degree at TSU in 1992, in Physical Chemistry, and thereafter has been awarded several prestigious fellowships and research grants from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany, multiple episodes, 1993-2016), Ministère de l'Education Nationale et de la Recherche (France, 1994/1995), Swedish Natural Sciences Research Council (1996-1997), National Research Council (USA, 1999), NATO (2000/2001), Landau Network - Centro Volta (Italy; 2002,2005,2009, Italy), and the Volkswagen Foundation (Germany, 2011-2014). During the abovementioned periods he often served as a Visiting Professor at respective universities. Currently D.E. Khoshtariya is a Principal Investigator in Biophysics at I. Beritashvili Center of Experimental Biomedicine (Tbilisi, Georgia). He also is a founder and a Head of the Institute for Biophysics and Bionanosciences at the Department of Physics, I. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU, Georgia, 2009). As a researcher and research team leader, D.E. Khoshtariya notably contributed to the mechanistic understanding of chemical and biological electron transfer in interfacial nanodevices, the outer-sphere optical versus thermal electron transfer, and the interplay of dynamic and stochastic reactive modes in protein function. Research interests of D.E. Khoshtariya also cover electron transfer in room-temperature ionic liquids, protein folding, stability, and conformational flexibility (in the context of their function), hydrogen-bonding in liquid and protein-bound water. He published about 90 papers and book chapters in peer-reviewed research journals and international editions. As an academic mentor, D.E. Khoshtariya supervised/consulted six successfully accomplished dissertations (including five Ph.D. and one D.Sci.) in Georgia and contributed in this kind of activity elsewhere. Very recently, in the framework of a new interdisciplinary effort, he initiated the innovative lecture courses/topics for the Masters and Ph.D. students at the Department of Physics of TSU.
